Entrusting your 2-year-old to a school is an act of immense trust. Perhaps the greatest act of trust a parent can make. That’s why, at 314, we don’t start by talking about bilingualism or innovative teaching methods. We start by answering the question every parent silently asks themselves: Will my child be happy here?

The answer is yes. And in this article, we want to show you how—in practical, day-to-day terms—we create an environment where every young child can find their place, at their own pace, surrounded by adults who support them with care.

"

At age 2, feeling safe
is the foundation for everything else.

A welcoming environment tailored to each child

Starting preschool is unlike any other experience. It doesn’t begin on the morning of September 1st for everyone at the same time. It starts well before then—and it happens at your own pace.

During the last week of August, even before the official start of the school year, we invite each family to a one-on-one meeting with the TPS teacher and her two assistants. It’s a simple, informal gathering with no academic agenda: your child gets to see their future classroom, explore the different activity areas at their own pace, and meet the three adults who will be supporting them every day. This first interaction helps build trust—for your child and for you.

The start of the school year is designed to adapt to each child’s pace. Some settle in within a few days, while others need more time—and that’s perfectly fine. Nothing is rushed, and nothing is forced. Because we know that a child who starts school with a sense of calm learns far better than a child who is torn away from their familiar surroundings too quickly.

A Day at the TPS — Moment by Moment

Predictability is what gives a 2-year-old a sense of security. At 314, every day follows a clear, gentle, and consistent routine—so your child always knows what comes next.

Starting at 8 a.m.
Daycare
Gentle Daycare
A welcome before class

Starting at 8 a.m., children who need it are welcomed into the gentle drop-off area by their teacher and her two assistants. This isn’t just a waiting area; it’s a calm time for free play and a smooth transition. The child starts their day without any sudden disruption.

The Morning Circle

Class starts at 9 a.m. We gather in a circle—first in French, then in English—to count, sing, and name the day, the weather, and who’s present. This moment sets the tone for the day and helps the children orient themselves in time. It’s also the first bilingual experience of the day—natural and joyful.

9:30 a.m.
Morning
Exploration
Small-group workshops

Workshops for groups of 3 to 4 children maximum, led by an adult. Hands-on activities, sensory development, language skills, first attempts at drawing, and simple scientific exploration. Each child progresses at their own pace—some observe before taking action, while others dive right in. Both approaches are welcome.

Body and Movement
Outdoor Time and Motor Skills

A 2-year-old needs to move around. Our outdoor space is designed with that in mind: motor skills activities, free exploration, and sensory discovery of the natural world. This time isn’t just recess—it’s an integral part of learning.

11:30 a.m.
Meal
Potluck
Let’s all sit down to eat

Mealtime is a special part of daily life at 314. Young and old eat lunch together—preschoolers alongside their older peers—in a warm and relaxed atmosphere. Each child brings their own lunchbox: a meal carefully prepared at home, which helps maintain a sense of family. Adults are present, attentive, and seated with the children. It is a time for natural social learning: observing the older children, learning to share a table, and naming what we eat in two languages. Children who need help are assisted with patience and discretion—never pressure, always kindness.

Afternoon
Calm weather
A nap or some rest

Rest time is sacred at TPS. For children who still need it, we offer a nap in a dedicated, quiet space, with their comfort blanket and their own personal routine. For the others, we provide individual quiet time. We don’t force anything—we listen to each child’s needs.

2:30 p.m.
Afternoon
Bilingual workshops
Songs, stories, and discoveries

The afternoon begins gently, in both languages. It’s time for the bilingual workshops—joyful, sensory, and never stuffy. Songs in French and English punctuate the transitions. Picture books are read aloud, sometimes twice—once in each language. Discoveries about the world come naturally: an insect observed, a seed planted, a texture named. The children aren’t “doing English”—they’re living in English, as a natural extension of their day.

The evening ritual

At 4:30 p.m., we gather for one last circle. We sing a song and share something we enjoyed—in English this time. Then each child goes back to their parent—with the words to describe their day and the desire to come back tomorrow.

Gentle Evening Childcare
A peaceful end to the day

For families who need it, the after-school care center welcomes young children until 6:00 or 7:00 p.m. in an atmosphere designed for relaxation and calm. Far from the hustle and bustle, this end-of-day space is intentionally sensory and quiet—featuring, in particular, a Snoezelen area with soft lighting, materials to explore, and soothing sounds. As children wait for their parents, they settle in, find their rhythm, and rest. A final haven before heading home.

The team

Adults who choose
this profession with all their heart

The quality of a preschool class doesn’t depend on its equipment or its walls—it depends on the adults who bring it to life. We know this. That’s why recruiting our preschool team is one of the most challenging decisions we’ve ever made.

We’re not just looking for degrees. We’re looking for teachers who have a deep understanding of child development from ages 2 to 6, genuine patience, the ability to observe before acting—and a sincere enthusiasm for this very special work.

Our team is also built around a fundamental linguistic principle: every adult speaks only their native language, under all circumstances. The French-speaking teacher always speaks French. The English-speaking assistants always speak English. Without ever mixing languages, without ever translating. This consistency is no mere detail—it is at the heart of our bilingual model’s effectiveness. At age 2, a child’s brain is perfectly capable of distinguishing between two languages, provided they are spoken by native speakers who are passionate and consistent. It is this clarity that builds solid, natural, and lasting bilingualism.

👀

Think before you act

Our team is trained in observing children. Before we step in, we observe. Before we make suggestions, we listen. Every child sends signals that only an attentive adult can read—and respond to appropriately.

🌱

Keep up with the beat

At 314, there is no set timeline for children. It is the adults who adapt. Some children start walking at 11 months, others at 15—and no one makes a big deal out of it. The same goes for every stage of their development.

💬

Naming emotions

A 2-year-old crying at the entrance isn’t “difficult.” They’re expressing a legitimate feeling. Our team doesn’t downplay emotions—we acknowledge them, name them, and help the child through them. This is the foundation of emotional intelligence, which begins to develop at this age.

🤝

A bond of trust with parents

Every evening, a quick update on your child’s day. Not a formal report—but a genuine conversation. Because you know your child best, and we work with you, not without you.

A Toddler's Passion

Working with 2-year-olds requires a special kind of energy and love. It’s not just a job—it’s a calling. Our TPS teachers have chosen this path, and it shows in every moment of the day.

The Environment

: A thoughtfully designed space for toddlers

The physical environment is no small matter. For a 2-year-old, the space speaks to them even before an adult says a word. At 314, our preschool classroom was designed with an understanding of how children develop at this age.

  • 🌡️
Spaces on a human scale. No large, overwhelming spaces. Clearly defined, intimate areas at the right height—a reading corner, a hands-on activity corner, a gentle motor skills corner, and a quiet corner. Each child can spend time there alone or with a friend.
  • 🌿
Natural, tactile materials. Wood, fabric, varied textures, natural light. An environment that engages the senses without overwhelming them—and inspires a desire to explore.
  • 📚
Books everywhere. In French and English, within easy reach for children, to flip through on their own or ask an adult to read. Books as a child’s first cultural experience, starting at age 2.
  • 🎵
Music as a common language. Bilingual songs that punctuate the day, simple instruments freely available. Music is one of the first bridges between the two languages—and one of the first shared joys.
  • 🌸
A dedicated outdoor space. Garden, sandboxes, and a play area. Because nature is a child’s first classroom—and moving around is part of learning.

✦ What we promise

Your child will be known, seen, and supported.

Not just a number in a group. A whole person, with their own habits, fears, strengths, tough days, and bright days. Our team is committed to getting to know your child deeply—and to keeping you informed, with honesty and kindness, every step of the way.

What we are asking of you

Welcoming a toddler means welcoming their whole family. We’re happy to do it—and we need your help to do it right.

Share with us what you know about your child. The words they use for the things that matter, their favorite stuffed animal and the routine that goes with it, what soothes them when they’re tired, and what makes them laugh. This information isn’t just administrative details—it’s the key to helping us meet them where they are.

Trust us on the timing. Some separations take two days; others take two weeks. We’re not asking you not to feel the pain of this separation—we’re asking you to trust the process. Your child senses how you feel. Your calmness allows them to find their own.
